oakfarmOn medicine. You know, antibiotics really are antibiotics, antiviral medicine really is antiviral, anti-inflammatory really is anti-inflammatory. However when it comes to psychiatry one suspects that medicine like antidepressant, anti-anxiety, perhaps even antipsychotic mostly are marketing names. It’s like pills that make you feel better, areillegal, because they make you feel better. One of the paradoxes in this life, things that makes you feel good are bad. Instead they give you pills that make you tired, sick and fat. I know this since I have untreatable mental health problems.
So this pandemic started in China and one can wonder how different the global response should have been if it started somewhere else. China shut down society, since that’s what they do for all crises. And to the surprise of many, western democraties followed.
Then, the accompanying picture is an extreme example of cheery picking. It is an illusion . But still, the thought that old ideas of voluntary action and personal responsibility used in Sweden, would work better than Chinese lockdowns, is nice. In a way, it is in line with the image one had in the 1990s that liberal democracy is not only more pleasant to live in than in dictatorships, but objectively performs better. That in this case, freedom under responsibility would work better for human health than the more populist, authoritarian methods. It's a world I would like to live in. And it was also the world I once thought I lived in. In reality it just looks like that since the second wave came later in Sweden than in the other countries. (Theroticly possible because of diffrent aprotch, but likely just by chance.)
