Thing I heard today. Apparently it has been said that when the United kingdom leaves and the Brits aren’t here to correct us the rest of EU will develop an Euro English. Like if we want to say “on top of the law” instead of “above the law”*, there won’t be anyone to correct us anymore. At least that how I understood the Euro English theory.

 

Unrelated, I saw that Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita was on Netflix, so now I’m going to see it. Mostly to have seen it. The only Fellini film I have seen before is Amarcord. But La Dolce Vita is the movie that gave the world the word “Paparazzo” and at least here the scene there Anita Ekberg bath in  Fontana di Trevi, Rome, is famous.

Americans will still be around to correct everyone, but maybe you'll drop the Britishisms in favor of the superior spelling. ;)

I was going to say when the Americans devolved from the UK they developed their own incorrect form of English :P

I have heard someone (a guy at the university, Li) jokingly say something like this: “There are no american language, just English being mispronounced”. Now he was Chinese and his English wasn’t perfect.

The only example I know of is “colour". But I also remember Eddie Izzard’s joke it was cheating in Scramble to add unnecessary letters like in British English spelling.

Other Britishisms include "s" instead of "z" in some verbs (e.g. "analyze" versus "analyse") and doubling "l" at the end of other verbs ("modeling" versus "modelling"). And punctuation outside of quotation marks.

I have notesed that some words are either spelled with "s" or "z" but I have always just gone with what the spellcheck says and haven't thought about it.

Australian English still uses "Gaol" for Jail. Mostly in official documents. I am not sure but I don't think even in the UK they use that anymore.

Just the other day I learned that, still just looking at spelling, gray or grey is also a different.
