Alex Garland's old novel The beach includes some words about the build up to the first gulf war - back then known as only “the Gulf war”. That the main character thought it would be disappointing if Saddam Hussein should just get his hands off Kuwait and the coalition that had built up all that force wouldn’t have the chance to “cream” him (yep, I have the book in front of me the wording is “get out of Kuwait or we cream you”). Do we now have some similar anticipation for Ukraines D-day? One day soon military equipment from the free world will be used against a hardened, war experienced authoritarian regime. This time no one thinks the regime would give up before the military confrontation. Hey, of course I know the confrontation is already going on. I’m talking about the Ukrainian spring offensive. The spring offensive that I guess no one thinks will go as - for lack of better words - smoothly as the first gulf war went.
Next entry will be about pets.
