A village they forgot to bomb
I can tell you the two worst foods I have made in my kitchen. I did it, so you don’t have too. One. When I first read about pickling mushrooms I thought: “I’ll never do that”. But inspired by a story from a recently liberated village in the Ukraine I tried pickling mushrooms, with lactic acid fermentation. I mixed mushrooms, shallots, garlic and salt with water in a glass jar with an air lock. Mushrooms have very little sugar in them, so the shallots were added for sugar, for the lactic acid bacteria, if I have to add that. The garlic on the other hand was added because, well, itÍ„’s not like I would take this experiment with me to work for lunch, so why not add garlic? Anyway, IMHO the end result was not good at all.
The other experiment that was a failure was pancakes made with peanut flour. In an online order of some food I thought I had ordered peanut butter but by mistake I had ordered peanut flour. One receipt I found with peanut flour was for pancakes. Again, IMHO the end result was not good at all.
Then about my twitter addiction. First, it's a place where people (deliberately?) misunderstand each other to turn their words against each other in a way I didn’t think I would see since I left elementary school. People are acting like bullies on a school yard.
Second, it told me that DeSantis is with Trump and doesn't want to help Ukraine. In other words, even for Europe's sake we have to hope for Biden or someone else from the Democratic party winning in 2024. (I’m quite sure I know enough about American politics to guess that a third party candidate isn’t likely.)
Third, Twitter is the only place where people still think about covid. Lately it was the news that Sweden has the lowest, or one of the lowest, excess deaths in Europe.’
Yeah, the Ukrainian story. It was about someone who had visited a newly liberated village in Ukraine and had been served pickled mushrooms. During the Russian occupation they couldn’t get any food delivery and the forest around the village was mined. So the oldest people in the village went out in the forest and picked mushrooms. The mushrooms later pickled.
