Depressing headline: As Covid-19 closes schools, the world’s children go to work. The one I got this link from pointed out that the grownups who decided schools should close, knew that young children very seldom get sick*. They closed schools hoping to protect adults. Here’s one thing about war rhetorics. The pandemic was compared to being in war. The old thing was that in war men should make sacrifices for the sake of women and children. Now when we have a pandemic, most countries decided that children should make sacrifices for the adults. Closing schools is just one example. Already in the first half of May Unicef warned that 1.2 million children could die because of the restrictions. Hunger, malnutrition, cancelled vaccines, and so on. The whole thing is complicated. When it comes to Chinese lockdowns, I can imagine that the data could be so unclear that both sides will declare they were right.
For all things that don’t work that great here, there are three things I’m proud of: 1. That we didn’t close the schools. That we let children have coherent edicaution. Bonus, keeping schools and kindergartens open means women didn’t have to be at home. 2. That we didn’t turn the pandemic into party politics the first thing we did. 3. That it was possible to double the number of beds at the ICUs.
* If you react on that. Sometimes unlikely things happen, it sad if i a child get sick. However I say what I said before, it is also sad if a kid get hit by a car. Is it possible to agree that education is more important than cars? If you want kids to be as safe as possible, I would ban cars before I banned schools. Kids die in car accidents, kids do not die from covid.
