My local hospital has a plaque with a thank you message from the Finnish soldiers that were treated there during the winter war. Today I saw the headline that some hospitals in the country are in a state of readiness. The article didn’t mention treating soldiers, it mentioned treating refugee. It still made me think if Ukrainian soldiers could be treated here? For all the terrible spending cuts hospitals has been through there was talk about treating Rumanina covid-patients here so why not Ukrainian soldiers. The connection to the winter war is also that, until the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the winter war was the last time our government sent weapons to a country in war. (It’s also the first time the European Union sends weapons to a war, just like the second Congo war was the first time the EU worked as a “peace and security actor”.)

I have to write some angry words about the invasion. Since a majority of Russians apparently support the invasion, my thought is, you don’t support a war criminal to be loved, you do that to be feared and hated. They should expect the west to do everything to stop them, short of starting world war III. All sanctioned that’s possible against Russia, and all help that’s possible to Ukraine. And if anyone thinks Russians don’t know about the war crimes. Sure they might not learn about specific war crimes, but perhaps we should expect educated people to know that the UN Charter prohibits wars of aggression. The last of course open up for whataboutism, it's making the invasion of Iraq illegal too. But then we have the question of intent. Bush and Blair at least had the intent to spread democracy and freedom. Putin has the intent of crushing democracy and freedom. If that is an exuse or not is another question.

Or if you want anything postive we have this headline from euromaiden: Russian soldiers reportedly refusing to redeploy to Ukraine, citing unwillingness to become “cannon fodder”. When a dictator lose the control of the military, he (always a he?) lose power. That's the rule, right?
